A senior medical planner and mental health design subject matter expert, Stephen is a proponent of “architect as advocate” for colleague, client, and community alike, and he believes strongly in leadership through service. His current work includes conducting design research and developing best practices in collaboration with our global Behavioral Health team—helping to drive positive patient outcomes and advance behavioral health treatment through design.
Stephen's current design work include a range of mental health facility types and scales. From the design of the inpatient and outpatient mental health spaces for Trillium HealthWorks’s new Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, Canada's largest hospital at 2.8 million square feet. As well, his planning work includes Cleveland Clinic's new 1 million square foot Neurological Institute, designing cutting-edge therapy spaces for complex neurological, addiction and memory care patient through their combined behavioral health programs. In addition, the Nunavut Recovery Centre will be serving the Inuit communities of the Canadian Arctic for generations to come and will be one of the northernmost mental health and addiction treatment facilities in the world once complete.
With awards from Healthcare Design Magazine, FastCo, and the Institute for Patient-Centered Design, Stephen is a collaborative researcher and accomplished designer. He was the youngest licensed architect elected to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Strategic Council and served as co-convener of the AIA Strategic Council’s Mental Health + Architecture Incubator, which seeks to elevate mental health design across the AIA’s 21 Knowledge Communities. He was recently awarded the 2022 George Pressler Under 40 Award by Healthcare Facilities Symposium and the 2023 ENR National Young Professional Award Winner. Stephen serves as a member of the Union of International Architect’s Public Health Group, is an elected Associate to the Board of the Design in Mental Health Network and selected as a 2022 Vanguard Fellow by NextCity
In his personal time, Stephen can be found traveling with his wife Carrie or building their three-generation home for their differently abled father-in-law diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Parker also volunteers at home and abroad, most recently in Kenya and India as a medical planner, designing hospitals for local NGOs.
