Data digitalization fosters timely decision making with up-to-date resources. Static processes become dynamic and reveal the impacts of planning decisions.
As datasets migrate to digital formats, planners are finding ways to use, visualize, and democratize data, opening the door for tools and insights that previously were available only to a small subset of professionals. Data digitization in planning has moved far beyond simple mapping, and now encompasses a rich directory of information interwoven with baseline datasets.
Three case studies demonstrate practical applications of digitalized data workflows that have informed and influenced decision making in planning and transportation: * The Keolis Evolve tool helped Greensboro, North Carolina, and RTC Las Vegas gain a deeper understanding of their transit systems and opportunities for sustainable, equitable growth; * The NOAA Digital Coast tool provides datasets ranging from economic data to satellite imagery and contains visualization and predictive tools that make data more accessible; and * The Swiftly Connected Transit Platform, a cloud-based software focused on openness, ease of use, and interconnectivity, enables transit agencies to operate nimbly and provide accurate passenger information.
Participants can draw on these examples of existing digital datasets and tools for local applications.
NPC Peer Reviewers assigned this presentation a learning level of Intermediate. For more on learning-level descriptions, visit our General Information Page.
Learning Objectives:
Identify commonly available digital datasets to establish a baseline of performance and existing conditions for planning and evaluation.
Understand how digitized planning data can improve equity in mobility and facilitate location-specific planning that goes beyond infrastructure improvements.
Compare three case studies of data digitalization and its application in land and transportation planning and analyses.
