Characterization of EMS Motor Vehicle Crash Activations and Injury Data Utilizing the National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Information System (NEMSIS)

Time: 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. PDT
Room 605

The Safe System Approach emphasizes preventing fatalities and serious injuries in addition to preventing crashes. The National EMS Information System (NEMSIS) captures data from local EMS agencies which provide a clinical characterization of severe crash injuries occurring among 1.4 million reported vehicle crashes per year. This Preconference Training will introduce participants to motor vehicle crash activations data within NEMSIS, explain the use of the Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) for EMS Data Linkage and demonstrate existing research and crash dashboards. NHTSA OEMS staff will provide guidance for collaboration with State EMS Offices and the NEMSIS Technical Assistance Center to access and utilize an online analytical processing (OLAP) data cube for conducting research and completing custom crash reports. State EMS Data Managers will demonstrate existing crash data projects and offer insight into potential research to improve motor vehicle crash data quality. Representatives from the NEMSIS Technical Assistance Center will provide a description of the format, data elements and resources available within the NEMSIS Public Release dataset. The Preconference Training will conclude with a review of the Current Motor Vehicle Crash Dashboards, the Transportation by the Numbers Post-Crash Care Reports, current EMS related motor vehicle crash research and publications.

Session Objectives:
  1. An overview of post-crash care and the role NEMSIS injury data plays in helping transportation safety leaders access key data for decision making.
  2. Direction on how to access EMS crash data through the State EMS Offices and the NEMSIS TAC.
  3. Direction on how to access and use data within the NEMSIS OLAP data cube.
  4. Approaches to the use of injury vs. fatality data to assess post-crash care.
  5. An understanding of EMS crash data characteristics of motor vehicle crash EMS activations including injury types and severity, ejections, pedestrian involved crashes, older adults, and vulnerable road users.
  6. An understanding of the Universally Unique Identifier for EMS data linkage between out-of-hospital, hospital, and trauma registries.
  7. Review of current motor vehicle crash dashboards, research and publications using NEMSIS data.
