Saturday, January 28, 2023
10:10 AM – 10:30 AM
Location: Morial Convention Center, ShopTalk Area A (LLX Marketplace, Hall J)
Do you model ways for caregivers to help children build fundamental early learning skills through storytime and other library programs? Would you like to provide the adults in their lives with more tools to foster their success? Go beyond Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) and learn how Pikes Peak Library District is using the LENA Start program to help families measure the amount of interactive talk their young child experiences. Research shows that children born during the pandemic vocalize less and experience less interactive talk than their pre-pandemic peers. The LENA Start parent education program provides families with individualized data reports to help them measure interactive talk with their child, encouraging behavioral changes that promote optimal development. Discuss strategies for implementing LENA Start at your library, see participant data, and hear how the program is impacting families in one community, pre- and post-Covid.
Learning Objectives:
...list the three things that LENA technology measures with the talk pedometer.
...describe the importance of early talk and its impact on child outcomes.
...define “conversational turns” and why they are more impactful for a child’s developing brain than talking alone.
...identify three community partners that could potentially support the LENA program.
