Integrating Critical Thinking into First-Year Instruction
Sunday, January 29, 2023
12:30 PM – 12:50 PM
Location: Morial Convention Center, ShopTalk Area C (LLX Marketplace, Hall J)
This session will discuss the importance of critical thinking for today's students and demonstrate two ways in which related concepts may be implemented in existing first-year library instruction programs. Librarians at the University of Mississippi have recently had some success restructuring library sessions around critical thinking and information literacy for students seeking readmission to the university after academic probation. One librarian from the Research & Instruction Department will share key takeaways from their experiences, as well as plans to further emphasize this type of library instruction across the first-year program. Attendees will leave with concrete examples of what they can do to address critical thinking in first-year library instruction at their own libraries.
Learning Objectives:
identify strategies for implementing critical thinking instruction in their libraries.
explore the importance of new information skills such as critical thinking and information literacy for first-year students.
determine existing library instruction practices that could be modified to include critical thinking concepts.
