Navigating [Challenging] Topics with Graphic Novels and Manga

Graphic novels and manga provide a nuanced visual narrative where readers can connect with and immerse themselves in characters’ lives. This visual medium allows readers to see expressions and background elements that cut out the need for an overly descriptive narrative. Let us introduce you to some of our favorite graphic novels and manga with topics that they're focused on. We’ll provide helpful discussion questions to navigate specific topics for readers of all ages and abilities and give suggestions for related programming. There will be time at the end to share additional titles and suggestions. Get inspired by the passion and expertise of three public librarians who love graphic novels, book talking, and inspiring youth of all ages through programming. We hope to spark conversation on how graphic novels and manga can be used in classrooms, school libraries, and public library programming to discuss topics that are at times controversial or challenging. This session will highlight specific titles we believe should be found in most collections and provide details that can be used in book talks and readers' advisory, as well as how to use them in programming.
