The P.A.S.S. Approach: Serving Patrons Who Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices

It is estimated that over 2 million persons with expressive language limitations utilize Augmentative and Alternative Communication in the United States. The P.A.S.S Approach is designed to assist librarians effectively serve patrons who use AAC devices as their main form of communication. Librarians will receive hands on training training on how to implement the P.A.S.S. Approach in their library and access to free printable materials.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize various forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication and understand the unique needs of patrons who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices.
Upon completion, participants will be able to implement the P.A.S.S. Approach and recognize why training and implementation of the approach is essential to serving this diverse community
Upon completion, participants will be able to employ tactics to increase patience when interacting with a patron who uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Upon completion, participants will be able to employ tactics to increase attention given to patrons who uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Upon completion, participants will be able to express clearly to management and colleagues the need for the P.A.S.S. Approach and request staff support and compliance in implementing the program
