Michael Philip Mossman was a 2013 Grammy Award finalist for “Best Instrumental Arrangement” for his “Afro-Latin Ellington Suite.” Michael has composed and arranged music for the film “Chico and Rita,” which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2012. His ballet, “La Cova do Rey Cintolo” was premiered in 2010 in Mondoñedo, Spain. His ballet “Beneath the Mask” was performed by Jon Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra with the Deeply Rooted Dance Company. He has conducted the Bilbao Philharmonic in a program of his own music and arranged for the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Michael has performed and recorded with innovative artists in a wide variety of jazz style. At the age of 18 he recorded with avant-garde jazz artists Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell. At the age of 25 he was signed by Blue Note Records and recorded 4 albums with Out of the Blue (OTB). Michael joined the Horace Silver Quintet in1989 and recorded the album “Rockin’ with Rachmaninov.” He was a member Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra, the Gerry Mulligan Quintet and performed with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Michael has performed, arranged and recorded with piano virtuoso Michel Camilo for over 30 years and arranged his recent SONY release, “Essence.”
Michael has played lead trumpet for Toshiko Akiyoshi, The Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Jon Faddis Orchestra, the Machito Orchestra and the Mingus Big Band, among many others.
Michael’s work in “Latin Jazz” has been extensive, starting with his arranging for the legendary Mario Bauza and his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. He has arranged, composed and performed with Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Paquito D’Rivera, Chico O’Farrill and many others.
Michael is currently on faculty at Queens College (CUNY) and the Juilliard School. He is a Yamaha artist and publishes music with the Hal Leonard Corporation.
