Dr. Darla S. Hanley, Dean of the Professional Education Division at Berklee College of Music, which includes Music Education, Music Therapy, Music Business, Professional Music, and the Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds a PhD and MM in Music Education Research (Temple University) and a BM in Music Education and Vocal Performance (dual major) (University of Massachusetts-Lowell). Darla is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda.
Darla is an experienced PK-12 music educator and arts leader who specializes in jazz and popular music education, creative movement, teacher education, and administration. Prior to Berklee, Darla served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, Professor of Music Education, and Director of the Shenandoah Singers (vocal jazz/show choir) at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia. She has experience working with Warner Bros., Spotify, Country Music Association, Alfred, Jazz Education Network, the Association for Popular Music Education, Arts Schools Network, and the National Association for Music Education, to mention a few examples.
Darla has presented sessions in nearly all 50 USA states and often works with teachers and students all over the world. Examples of some of her recent presentations and professional engagement include the New York City Department of Education (New York, NY), California State University (Northridge, CA), Hong Kong Baptist University (Hong Kong), Viljandi Culture Academy and Tartu University (Viljandi and Taru, Estonia), Liceu Conservatory (Barcelona, Spain), and SXSW.edu Conference (Austin, TX).
Darla is a published author on topics related to music education and arts administration. Her latestpublication is "Jazz Is Elementary: Creativity Development Through Music Activities, Movement Games, and Dances for K-5" (co-authored with Allison Kipp) (Berklee Press/Hal Leonard).
