Jerald Shynett has been a member of the GRAMMY-nominated Jazz Surge for over twenty years and has performed on five recordings with the ensemble. He is an associate professor of jazz studies and trombone at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and has performed, composed and arranged jazz music professionally for the last 25 years. Shynett directs the Hwy 17 Big Band, a professional jazz ensemble based in Wilmington, NC, as well as Slide Effects, an eight-piece jazz trombone ensemble. He is an active performer and clinician throughout North Carolina, including as jazz trombone and combo instructor at the UNC at Chapel Hill Summer Jazz Workshop. Shynett has presented and performed at the International Society of Jazz Composers and Arrangers, and his writing extends to television and film with Paramount’s Domestic Disturbance and Warner Brother’s television series One Tree Hill. He holds a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Miami (1996) and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of South Florida (1994).
