Gretchen L. Carlson, Ph.D., is a musicologist and professor of music history and culture at Towson University, where she teaches courses in jazz, film music, popular music, and music in American culture, among others. She has authored several articles focusing on jazz and film, featured in the Journal of the Society for American Music and Jazz and Culture. Her recent book, Improvising the Score: Rethinking Modern Film Music Through Jazz, provides a vivid investigation of innovative collaborations between renowned contemporary jazz artists and prominent independent filmmakers, exploring how these integrative jazz-film productions challenge us to rethink the possibilities of cinematic music production. Her current research interests include jazz’s collaborative intersections with contemporary media, jazz and social activism, and historically informed performance practice in jazz. An active pianist, Carlson balances her research and teaching with solo and collaborative performance and maintains a private piano studio. She is honored to be a member of JEN, and to have the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from such fantastic scholars, musicians, and educators throughout the world.
