Matthew Storie is adjunct instructor of Saxophone at Furman University and Music Theory at Anderson University in South Carolina. He is a recent graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he
completed both his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in Jazz Performance.
Before his time in Illinois, he completed his Bachelor of Music degree in Saxophone
Performance at Furman University.
Equally at home as both a jazz and classical saxophonist, Matthew has had the opportunity to
perform at venues across the United States as well as perform with music greats including
Christian McBride, Ron Blake, Steve Wilson, JD Steele, McClenty Hunter, Sasha Berliner,
Nathan Eklund, Geoffrey Keezer, Carl Allen, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Jiggs Wigham, Bob
Moses, Sharel Cassity, Tom Walsh, Brad Dutz, Tito Carrillo, Larry Gray, Chip McNeill, Rick
Simerly, Stockton Helbing, Bill Sears, and has opened for Charlie Daniels. He has performed
and presented at multiple music conferences including the 2018 and 2022 JEN Conferences as
well as the 2019 and 2020 North American Saxophone Alliance Conferences.
Matthew is the bandleader of Simply This Quintet, a collaborative ensemble that performs
original compositions by members of the band. This ensemble released their second album
entitled Stepping Up, in October 2021. They regularly tour and present masterclasses at
universities and music conferences. They have presented masterclass and concerts at Furman
University and Anderson University in South Carolina, The Ohio State University in Ohio, and
Millikin University in Illinois. As a solo artist, Matthew released his debut album of original
compositions in February 2022. This album, Hwy 538, features music inspired by memories and
experiences from his childhood summers spent on the North Shore of Lake Huron in Ontario,
Canada. Matthew’s dissertation research resulted in the creation of a resource to aid college level
classical saxophonists in developing a jazz sound.
