From his arrangement of Caravan heard in the final scene of the Academy Award-winning motion picture Whiplash to his orchestrations performed by the Chicago Symphony, the Philly Pops and the Dallas Symphony, and from his extensive arrangements for the Dallas Brass to his published compositions and arrangements numbering in the hundreds, John Wasson’s music has been heard and performed around the world by professional artists and educational organizations alike. Born and raised in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, John journeyed to the University of North Texas where he earned degrees in music theory and trombone performance. Since college he has toured with the Stan Kenton and Woody Herman Orchestras and performed with dozens of major jazz artists. He has composed and produced music for such organizations as National Geographic, the United Way, and the American Prairie Reserve’s Ken Burns American Heritage Prize. John leads and performs in his own Strata Big Band and CoolBrass Jazztet in the Dallas area. In 2022 John rejoined the Dallas Brass on their national tour. He currently directs the Jazz Ensemble and teaches Arranging and Music Entrepreneurship at Texas A&M University in Commerce. John is an XOBrass performing artist.
