Finding Flamenco in Sketches of Spain: Improvising the Saeta

This presentation demonstrates how Gil Evans drew from typical brass and vocal melodies of the flamenco saeta to compose “Saeta” from Sketches of Spain. Using Evans’s handwritten score, this session describes how he and his collaborators used improvisation and studio techniques to transform these flamenco materials into a distinct composition.
