Clinical Psychologist
Traumacentrum Belgium
Blankenberge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
It was very clear to me that when I started my training as a psychologist, I wanted to specialize in trauma. For this reason after I graduated my bachelortraining in Applied Psychology, I starterd my Master of Science of Clinical Psychology at the University of Ghent. Following my master I started my practice under the supervision and in training of Doris D’Hooghe, to learn different forms of therapy and new perspectives on existing disorders.
For several years now, I have been working with people who experienced trauma and are suffering from severe trauma-related and dissociative symptoms. In this field of work, I challenge myself every day to grasp more of the complexity of psychotraumatology and find new ways to broaden the possibilities of treatment. I try to approach people in their individuality and uniqueness and comprehend the totality of their being and their experiences.
It’s clear that working with trauma needs a ‘multiperspective’ approach, including for example developmental theories, neurobiology, and attachment theories. Together with my colleague, according to the three pillars of Traumacentre Belgium, we enhance awareness about trauma and educate about the impact and treatment of traumatic events. The third pillar is trauma therapy in which, through the clinical experience, together with colleagues, we develop new insights and theories about trauma and its consequences e.g. ‘Invisible Attachment Trauma’ and ‘Developmental Model of Dissociation’. We defined different forms of interpersonal traumatic experiences and their impact of it on development. This is a work in progress from what we hope, will help improve the quality of healthcare and trauma treatment in particular.
I hope to connect with other therapists in this field to broaden our knowledge and inspire each other because I believe this is a mission we share and where we can support one another.
