Integrating Neurofeedback into Trauma Treatment:Regaining Control of the Mind and Body
Monday, April 17, 2023
3:30 PM – 5:00 PM US Eastern Time
Location: Virtual Only
This session is eligible for 1.5 ASWB and APA credits.
Electroencephalogram (EEG) neurofeedback has been shown to alter critical brain networks associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), resulting in symptom alleviation among individuals with PTSD. A recent RCT has shown that alpha neurofeedback can lead to clinically meaningful reductions in PTSD symptoms. The mechanisms underlying these neuroplastic changes of alpha neurofeedback are beginning to be revealed and will be discussed during this lecture. Moreover, the application of this type of neurofeedback as an integrative treatment approach in patients with complex trauma and dissociative symptomatology will be illustrated through case examples. Finally, combining alpha neurofeedback with traditional Indigenous practices will be described as a means of addressing the intergenerational transmission of trauma in this population.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to:
Define alpha neurofeedback
Discuss the clinical effects of alpha neurofeedback
Identify the effects of alpha neurofeedback on brain functioning
Discuss the application of alpha neurofeedback in patients with complex trauma and dissociative symptomatology
Describe the use of alpha neurofeedback in Indigenous populations
