Abstract of Presentation: The presenter will discuss the benefits of conducting language sampling with adolescents in different genres including expository and narrative discocurse, and will explain how to do so effectively and efficiently. She will also explain how to establish reasonable goals for intervention based on the results of a student’s language sample and how to carry out treatment with that student, targeting lexical and syntactic weaknesses in both expository and narrative discourse.
Summary of Presentation:
In this presentation, Prof Nippold will discuss the benefits of conducting language sampling with adolescents and will explain why, when, and how to carry out language sampling most efficiently and effectively. Case studies of adolescents who have developmental language disorder (DLD) and those who have typical language development (TLD) will be used to illustrate the main points. The presenter will also discuss recent innovations in technology and the creation of normative databases in different genres. Finally, she will explain how to derive functional goals for intervention from a language sample, and how then to carry out treatment for expository and narrative discourse that is relevant to academic success.
