Karen Tzanetopoulos, M.S., is a speech and language pathologist who specializes in treating children with language disorders and dyslexia as well as in helping children learn math. She is the c0-author of the book How Children Learn Math: The Science of Math Learning in Research and Practice, being released in October, 2022. Karen's co-authors are Nancy Krasa, PhD, a cognitive psychologist and adjunct at Ohio State University, and Colleen Maas, PhD, a math methods professor at the University of Cincinnati .The book reviews the cognitive research on how children learn math and provides methods for helping children learn math more easily. Karen's role in the book focused on the essential role of language in learning math and how to use language more effectively. Her interest in math began while working in the public schools as an SLP when she observed that many of her students with language disorders also struggled to learn math, and realized the connection between math and language. The Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago awarded Karen and two teammates an Innovation Corps grant funded by the National Science Foundation in 2016 to study the problems of teaching math across the United States and to discover ways to teach math more effectively, with a focus on language.. Karen uses a brain-based approach to math and language therapy which was developed while working at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Institute for Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch at the beginning of her career. Currently, she owns a private practice in the Chicago area and presents her findings at a variety of conferences and to school districts.
