Student
Saint Xavier University
Chicago, Illinois, United States
Sam Toninato is a graduate student at Saint Xavier University. Previously, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from DePaul University in 2009, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies.
At the Ludden Speech and Language Clinic, Sam has worked with a variety of clients, ranging from young children to senior citizens. Through this work, he has treated a variety of disorders, including aphasia, childhood language delay, phonological and articulation disorders, pragmatic deficits, AAC use, and acquired apraxia. Sam has also led group therapy for transition-age AAC users. This group therapy program included social and vocational goals, with an emphasis on functional communication in real world settings.
Prior to enrolling at Saint Xavier, Sam worked for years as a PMP-certified IT consultant, specializing on cloud technology and WAN design. In this role, he oversaw large-scale IT implementations, educated and supported clients, and calculated financial data to drive intelligent decision-making. Sam also taught a citizenship class for adult immigrants at Centro Romero, a non-profit in Chicago’s diverse Rogers Park neighborhood. While at DePaul, Sam helped run the University Center for Writing-based Learning. These unique and disparate experiences cultivated a love of language, science, and service. These passions (along with a supportive push from a supervisor) led Sam on the path to Speech Language Pathology.
