Abstract: It has been reported that 25-45% of typically developing children demonstrate feeding and swallowing problems. In children diagnosed with developmental disorders the prevalence of feeding disorders is reported to be 30-80%. This presentation discusses the definition of pediatric feeding-swallowing disorders, development of feeding-swallowing skills in children, and the clinical assessment process using the team approach. We will talk about the diagnostic report writing and the essential components of the report. Participants will watch video clips of cases and practice in mock assessments.
Summary of Presentation: The purpose of the session is to educate participants about the clinical assessment process of pediatric feeding-swallowing disorders. The course addresses definition of pediatric feeding-swallowing disorders, normal development of feeding-swallowing skills, standardized assessment tools available, components of assessment, role of a team, and diagnostic report writing. At the end of the presentation attendees will participate in completing mock feeding-swallowing assessments based on video clips.
