Abstract: This session introduces the 3Es Model for Stuttering Therapy, a tool to assist generalist clinicians in selecting appropriate, evidence-based treatment activities for clients who stutter, both children and adults. There are ever-increasing options for effective stuttering interventions: avoidance reduction, ACT, biofeedback, plus all the “classics” like fluency shaping and stutter modification. How do you know which one to choose??
The 3Es model, and corresponding toolkit, was designed for the SLP who has learned about many stuttering treatment options, but needs support figuring out which one to use. This model does not include new intervention methods. Rather, it is a framework to analyze, evaluate, and select specific interventions based on a client’s individual profile.
Summary of Presentation : Introductions and disclosures
Part 1: theory and basis for the model Knowledge-to-practice gap: despite a bevy of EBP interventions, SLPs still uncomfortable with stuttering tx Creation of the model: as the iceberg is to the stuttering experience, the 3Es model is to stuttering therapy Model is not a therapy approach, it is a way to conceptualize and critically analyze all the various diverse therapy approaches, a “supramodel” of stuttering therapy Overview of how to apply model to goal planning and treatment session planning
Part 2: research and evidence base Review of themes from recent ( < 10 years) literature in stuttering research (social, genetic, neuroscience, counseling, etc.) Discussion of particular major research themes that have yet to be concretely incorporated into current treatment approaches (eg stigma) Structured illustration of how the 3Es model overlays onto the entirety of the most current, comprehensive body of stuttering research
Part 3: goal planning application (interactive) How to use the model to write relevant, EBP SMART goals How to use the model to update treatment plans as stuttering evolves over the lifespan
Part 4: treatment case study using 3Es model and planning tool (interactive) Present clinical case information (video, OASES scores, supplemental info) Provide prompts for identifying Es and Cs relevant for the individual client Use treatment planning tool to identify and select three appropriate activities for one session, and provide corresponding rationale (using model as support, as needed)
Final closing discussion and Q&A
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Define the 3Es and 3Cs of the stuttering experience and relation to successful therapy outcomes.
Describe three (3) common evidence-based treatment activities and explain which aspect(s) of the stuttering experience they target, using the framework as a reference.
Use the 3Es framework to select at least four (4) evidence-based treatment activities for an individualized case study client.
