Abstract: This presentation will provide an overview of bilingual language development and focus on the process of identifying language disorders in bilingual children.
Summary: The proportion of children who speak language(s) at home other than or in addition to English continues is projected to continue expanding at a rapid rate nationwide. It is critical for speech-language pathologists, audiologist, and related professionals to be familiar with the dynamic process of bilingual language development. It is equally important for clinical service providers to be aware of best practices for conducting least biased and appropriate assessment of children who speak minority status languages in order to minimize misidentification.
