Chris Estes is a professional Landscape Architect and General Contractor. He is president and owner of Estes Design, Inc. and Anglesy Construction in Charlotte NC, specializing in Nature Based design & construction for storm water compliance. Mr. Estes grew up in rural Georgia after moving from England while he was in grade school. Through spending all his teen years farming and as a steward of the environment, his passion grew for discovering the practicality of how ecological processes function in nature. Mr. Estes spent the early part of his career studying and delineating wetlands. During that time Mr. Estes was among the first group of North Carolina stream restoration professionals to complete Rosgen Level IV Fluvial Geomorphology certification. He initiated the first stream morphology research collaboration between the City of Charlotte Stormwater, a public utility, and the University of North Carolina Charlotte. Mr. Estes later conducted research on culvert plunge pool energy dissipation in urban streams that was published by the Journal of American Water Resources Association. This research resulted in new standards for urban stream restoration.
Through his urban wetland & stream projects in North Carolina, Mr. Estes saw firsthand how impervious pavements profoundly chanes and degrade surface waters in developing watersheds. Mr. Estes has spent the last 18 years researching infiltration in clay soils and implementing strategies to reverse this trend through innovative infiltration and pavement technologies, including the first multi-family pervious concrete (PC) parking system in North Carolina and the first private and public (PC) lots in Kentucky. In 2012, as a member of North Carolina DENR technical committee, Mr. Estes assisted with revising the NC BMP Manual allowing Permeable Pavement as an accredited “statewide” Stormwater Control Method.
