Dr. David M. Shafer attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with a BS Degree Biology. He then attend the Harvard School of Dental Medicine receiving his DMD with cum laude in a special field for his research on the pathophysiology of osteopetrosis. Dr. Shafer completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) in 1990 at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He has been a faculty member at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine since 1990, and has been Chair of OMFS, and Residency Program Director since 1997. He been a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery since 1992. In addition to serving on numerous committees of AAOMS, and for the last 5 years as District 1 Trustee, he has held has been involved extensively in organized dentistry. He served on the Board of the American Dental Education Association representing the Council of Hospitals and Advanced Education Programs. He also holds numerous leadership positions at UCONN Health including Associate Chief of the Medical Staff, a member of the Clinical Affairs Subcommittee of the Health Centers Board of Directors, and has previously served as Vice-President of the Medical Staff. He has served in the past as the President of the Connecticut Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and as a member of the AAOMS House of Delegates. He has been an active member of the American Dental Association and the Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) currently serving on the CSDA Special Committee on Anesthesia. Dr. Shafer is an author or co-author of over 50 publications and numerous abstracts and poster presentations. He has been an investigator on several Federal, foundation and corporate funded research projects. Dr. Shafer has lectured at numerous local, national, and international meetings. He is considered an authority on the use of a “surgery first” protocol in orthognathic surgery.
