Sasha Story, Community Outreach and Enrollment Manager at Nymbl Science. Fall prevention education specialist.
I worked for North Metro Fire Rescue District in Broomfield, Colorado for 5 years as a fire/life safety education specialist. Our fire district divided up the community into different age groups for community risk reduction. I was fortunate to have the older adult population in my care for fire and life safety education. This education included giving presentations to the older adults in our community about fire and life safety issues. One of the biggest topics of education was, fall prevention. As we know, falls are one of the top reasons for high call volume numbers for fire agencies.
While at North Metro Fire I became very passionate about fall prevention and learned about Nymbl's partnership with Arvada Fire here in Colorado. Through that partnership, Arvada's call volume for falls decreased by 35%! I started to partner with Nymbl when I would give presentations about fall prevention within North Metro Fire's district, however, felt limited in my reach because I could not educate beyond our district's boarders. I joined Nymbl so I could be involved in a fall prevention reach that was more impactful to older adults throughout Colorado.
Nymbl is a fall prevention/balance training app for older adults. This is a fall prevention program that can be done in the privacy of the users own home. The app is designed to better connect the mind and body, so reflexive balance is stronger creating the ability for older adults to catch themselves when they start to fall. Reflexive balance starts to decline as we age and the Nymbl app is designed to counteract this process of aging. Having Nymbl in the hands of older adults in more communities will not only help the older adults who are falling, but it could also have a great impact in a decline of fall related calls for fire agencies. Collaboration between Nymbl and fire agencies is a natural fit for fall prevention as a CRR tool!
