Course Description: Vaginal Surgery for the Urologist is a practical surgical techniques course which will cover the major cases involving vaginal reconstructive surgery. In 2023 the course will focus on the urethra and cover the most common vaginal procedures performed by urologists, featuring four experienced vaginal surgeons from three “urology generations.” The diverse faculty will bring unique surgical insights to the course. The course will not include didactic sessions, but rather teaching by videos, faculty panel and audience discussions. The course will be heavily weighted toward practical aspects and tips and tricks of vaginal surgery, specifically geared toward the practicing urologist to enhance surgical practice and decision making. While we will incorporate evidence-based outcome in all appropriate areas, the focus will be on surgical approach and technique. In 2023 we will focus on surgery for stress incontinence, complications of stress incontinence surgery (obstruction and erosion) and urethral reconstruction for strictures, diverticulum, fistula and urethral erosion. We will address the question of why and when to consider surgery via a vaginal approach. We will discuss general principles of vaginal and urethral surgery (incisions, dissection and exposure). The course will be technique focused and will utilize videos from actual cases to show different surgical techniques with comments from each of the faculty. We will also discuss alternative techniques including those proposed by faculty course participants, and there will be extensive audience-led discussions among faculty and participants. Participants are also encouraged to bring challenging cases to the faculty for open discussion.
