Course Description: This course is designed to apply core principles in geriatrics to common clinical situations in urology practice. Cases from actual practice will be used to highlight and illustrate key elements of assessment and management for older urology patients. This includes concepts in preoperative assessment, clinical optimization for surgery, shared decision making, informed consent and decision-making capacity, the role of family and surrogate decision makers, postoperative management and palliative care. This will include consideration of complications and associated management. The course faculty are all experienced clinicians in urology and geriatrics. They will use actual clinical cases from practice as the foundation for presentations and discussions. Examples will emphasize evidence-based research findings to support discussion. Active audience participation will be encouraged.

Learning Objectives:

Describe commonly used assessment tools for frailty, mobility impairment, cognitive decline, delirium and other geriatric syndromes in older adult urology patients.
Summarize methods to evaluate and optimize perioperative care for geriatric patients undergoing various types of urological surgery.
Outline the components of ethics as applied to urological health care needs for older adult patients, particularly when there are questions or conflicts associated with decisions for care.
List the major goals of palliative care as they apply to urological practice for older adults.
Identify resources that may be available in your health system or regional community to help enhance care for older adult patients including therapy services, rehabilitation and skilled care options, hospice and multidisciplinary care teams.
Recognize the importance of caregiver burden on families and loved ones helping to provide care for older adult urological patients.
Utilize actual clinical case examples to highlight and examine the complex issues associated with providing high quality urological health care for older adults in clinical practice.
Discuss how health policy and systems practices influence the ability to provide necessary urological care for older adults within the overall health care spectrum.
