Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Vice-Chair of the Department of Urology
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences
Brian Keith McNeil, MD, FACS is Vice Chair of the Department of Urology and Urology Residency Program Director at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He also serves as the Urology Chief of Service at the University Hospital of Brooklyn. Dr. McNeil completed his post-graduate training in surgery and urology at Loyola University Medical Center. He completed a clinical fellowship in urologic-oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center following research fellowships in urologic-oncology at both the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute and James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. His focus is urologic care in medically underserved communities, a dilemma international in scope, which he strongly believes we must “think globally and act locally” to address.
Similar to the "Doughnut City” concept, previously used to describe booming economic centers surrounded by concentrated pockets of poverty, some patient groups have access to state of the art treatment while other more vulnerable populations lack access to standard of care therapy. This is not only an issue in urology but in most fields of health care. Dr. McNeil often wonders now if increased access to care would have delayed his father’s death from prostate cancer, when Dr. McNeil was only 15 years old.
