Dr. Leonard Gomella is the Bernard Godwin Professor of Prostate Cancer and Emeritus Chair of Urology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. Originally from New York, he completed medical school, and urology at the University of Kentucky. After a Urologic Oncology Fellowship in the Surgery Branch of the NCI, he joined Jefferson in 1988 and became Chair in 2002. He is Senior Director for Clinical Affairs for the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer and is the Urology VP for Jefferson Health.
His team was first to use molecular techniques to detect circulating prostate cancer, the first report of a "prostate cancer liquid biopsy". He Co-chaired the 2017 and 2019 Philadelphia Prostate Cancer Consensus Meetings on prostate cancer genetic testing.
He has given over 700 presentations, written over 600 papers, is Editor of the “Canadian Journal of Urology” and authored and edited 63 editions of 17 different books for students, residents, and physicians and edits the “5 Minute Urology Consult". "Recovering from Prostate Cancer”, the first public book on prostate cancer was authored in 1993. In medicine, he is known for the "Clinician's Pocket Reference" (“the Scut Monkey Book”) with the 12th edition renamed “Gomella and Haist's Clinician’s Pocket Reference” .
He has reveived numerous "top Doctor" recognitions including a 2015 recognition in Newsweek. Men’s Health Magazine has isted Dr. Gomella as one of the top urologists in the US. Awards received are from the ACS, the NCI and a "Distinguished Alumnus Award” from UK. He has been President of Mid-Atlantic AUA and the Society of Urologic Oncology and elected to the AAGUS and CSGUS. In 2015 he received a “Distinguished Contribution Award” from the AUA and the “Jefferson Achievement Award in Medicine”. In 2023, the AUA awarded him “Honorary Membership” and in 2026 he will receive the AUA's "Lifetime Achievement Award"..
