Dr. Cookson is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, and holds a BA with high honors in Journalism (1984). He received his MD from OU's College of Medicine (1988). Dr. Cookson did his Urology Residency at The University of Texas in San Antonio and fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Dr. Cookson served on the faculty of Vanderbilt School of Medicine from 1998-2013. At Vanderbilt, he was the inaugural Rodes and Patricia Hart Professor of Urologic Oncology. He had a distinguished career that included serving as the Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Urology and Director of the Urologic Oncology Fellowship. In 2009, Dr. Cookson earned his Master of Management in Health Care from the Vanderbilt's Owen Graduate School of Management. In 2013, he joined the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine where he was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology. In 2025, he was appointed Deputy Director and Associate Cheif Physician Executive of OU Health's Stephenson Cancer Center.
He has authored 275 peer-reviewed journal publications and 30 chapters in urology and urologic surgery. He is an active member of the AAGUS, the Clinical Society of AAGUS, and numerous other national professional societies. He is former Vice Chair of the AUA/SUO Guidelines on Advanced Prostate Cancer, past President of the SUO, and the past President of the South-Central Section of the AUA. He has been recognized nationally for his outstanding contributions to urologic oncology, and consistently named as one of the Best Doctors in America and as one of America’s Top Doctors for Cancer. In 2018, he was awarded the Alumni of the Year from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. In 2024, he was elected as a trustee to the American Board of Urology.
