Dr. Kam Kaler completed his undergraduate training at the University of Calgary while earning both his BA in Economics and BSc in Biological Sciences with distinction. Thereafter, he earned his MD at the University of Alberta and completed his Urology residency at the University of Manitoba. . Dr. Kaler then joined the Department of Urology at University of California, Irvine in 2015 as a fellow in endourology, image-guided therapy, and robotic surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Ralph Clayman, Dr. Jaime Landman, and Dr. Thomas Ahlering. He was then recruited to join their faculty in 2017. Subsequently, he was recruited to the University of Calgary and Southern Alberta Institute of Urology in 2018.
Throughout his training, Dr. Kaler has been active in research in prostate cancer, kidney cancer and other kidney diseases. Dr. Kaler has won awards for his research including Best poster at the 2016 American Urological Association (AUA) meeting for his randomized controlled trial with hypothermia during robotic prostatectomy. Dr. Kaler has also patented a device that allows real-time measuring of forces during ureteral access deployment. . The initial testing of the device was awarded second place in the Endourological Society Basic Science Contest in 2017. For this research, Dr. Kaler was also selected to participate in the 2018 AUA Research Forum Early-Career Investigator Showcase to highlight the best that the field of “Urology” has to offer.
Dr. Kaler has authored seven chapters in major urological textbooks including Campbell-Walsh Urology, Robotics Urology, and Smith’s Textbook of Endourology. The topics include endoscopic-guided percutaneous renal access, thermoablation of renal tumors, nerve-sparing robotic radical prostatectomy, and basics of laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He has authored several publications in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Urology, World Journal of Urology, and Journal of Endourology.
