Dr. Koutros is a cancer epidemiologist in the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Koutros’ research involves the design and conduct of epidemiologic studies to evaluate occupational exposures as risk factors for cancer. Occupational exposures are key risk factors for bladder cancer, second only to smoking. This connection between occupation and bladder cancer has led to an expanded research program on the etiology of bladder cancer. Dr. Koutros serves as co-PI of the New England Bladder Cancer Study, a population-based case-control study which aims to understand the contribution of occupational and environmental exposures to the development of bladder cancer. She also serves as co-PI of the NCI Bladder Cancer GWAS, an international consortium of bladder cancer studies that aims to characterize the underlying genetic architecture of bladder cancer.
