Ashutosh (Ash) K. Tewari is a renowned urologist and prostate cancer specialist who serves as the Milton and Carroll Petrie Department of Urology Chairman at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He holds various leadership positions, including Director of the Center of Excellence for Prostate Cancer, Director of The Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Center for Prostate Health, Director of the Robert F. Smith Prostate Cancer Disparity Program, and Surgeon-in-Chief of the Tisch Cancer Hospital.
Dr. Tewari is recognized globally for his expertise in prostate cancer care and his commitment to reducing healthcare disparities. He leads a multidisciplinary team in the Department of Urology, focusing on advancing prostate cancer treatment, research, and education. With more than 9,000 robotic radical prostatectomy surgeries performed to date, Dr. Tewari is considered an authority in the field.
Dr. Tewari's research focuses on deciphering the genomic origins of prostate cancer and translating this knowledge into practical applications for physicians through advanced imaging techniques. He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to urology, including induction into the prestigious American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons in March 2023. Dr. Tewari is also a recipient of the American Urological Association's Gold Cystoscope Award, presented annually to a urologist who has significantly contributed to the field within ten years of residency completion.
In addition to his clinical and leadership roles, Dr. Tewari is a clinician-scientist who has incorporated molecular diagnostic tools like Oncotype Dx, Decipher, Prolaris, Precision medicine, Sema-4, and Foundation One for risk stratification and decision support. He is one of only a few robotic surgeons to be awarded research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense, including an R01 grant for which he serves as the Principal Investigator, researching the utility of multiphoton microscopy during prostate cancer treatment.
