David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
Isla P. Garraway is a Professor and Director of Research in Urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is a staff urologist in the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, where she currently advises and leads efforts in the Precision Oncology Program for Cancer of the Prostate and ensuring equity with the Veterans Health Administration’s role in the presidential initiative, Cancer Moonshot. She is a Member of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Member of the Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research. Dr. Garraway is a surgeon-scientist and Principal Investigator of a basic/translational science laboratory that is focused on characterizing molecular, cellular, and microenvironmental interactions that influence metastatic prostate cancer progression. In addition to her clinical practice within the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System, she leads several research and clinical operations projects in prostate cancer with a focus on the etiologies of racial/ethnic disparities. Dr. Garraway has received the Donald S. Coffey Career Development, Young Investigator, and Challenge Awards from the Prostate Cancer Foundation as well as awards from the STOP Cancer Foundation, and the Margaret E. Early Foundation. Her research programs are currently funded by the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Defense, the Veterans Health Administration, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and the Jean Perkins Foundation. Dr. Garraway earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Brown University and completed the Medical Scientist (MD-PhD) Training Program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA with a doctorate in Molecular Biology. Upon completion of the UCLA Urology residency program, she joined the UCLA faculty. Outside of the hospital setting, she teaches the community about prostate cancer and screening in black communities.
