Dr. Dmitriy Nikolavsky is a Professor of Urology, a Director of Reconstructive Urology and Transgender Care GURS Fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY. He graduated from Oakland Community College with Associate Degree in Science, and subsequently earned Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Nikolavsky has earned his medical degree from Wayne State University and completed his Residency in Urology at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. He completed Fellowship in Reconstructive Urology at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Nikolavsky leads clinical and translational research focusing on development of novel platforms for genitourinary reconstruction. His clinical interests include urethral reconstruction, fistula, male incontinence and urological care for transgender patients. Dr. Nikolavsky developed a novel concept of liquid buccal mucosa graft for endoscopic urethroplasty in an animal stricture model. After a successful development of the pilot study and validation studies in animal model, Dr. Nikolavsky is currently conducting in a prospective Phase I human trial. He has edited a book on urological care for transgender patients, and is collaborating with several centers in the US and worldwide on projects ranging from bench research to clinical outcomes studies.
Dr. Nikolavsky is a member of the American Urological Association (AUA), the Societe Internationale d’Urologie (SIU), World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), International Society of Reconstructive Urology (ISORU), and Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS), where he was elected to the Board of Directors in May 2019. Since 2017 Dr. Nikolavsky has served as a faculty at the annual AUA meetings for the course titled “What a General Urologist Needs to Know about Care for Transgender Patients”.
