Mitchell C. Benson recognized that he wished to pursue a career in Urology. Following an residency in surgery he became a resident in Urology at The Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Following his residency, he went to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he was a Fellow in Urologic Oncology.
After his fellowship, Dr. Benson returned to Columbia University P&S. Dr. Benson was one of the first recipients of the Herbert Irving Assistant Professor awards from July 1988 - June 1991. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Urology, and in July 1995 to Professor of Urology. In 1997, the George F. Cahill Professor of Urology and then Herbert and Florence Irving Professor. In November 2003, he was named Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center.. In August 2005, he became chairman of the Department of Urology. Dr. Benson resigned as chair in September 2013. In 2015, he became the Chief of Urologic Oncology at N.Y. Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital, Bronxville, N.Y. He cares for patients at Columbia University Medical Center and N.Y Presbyterian Westchester Hospital.
Dr. Benson has been recipient of numerous honors. After Phi Beta Kappa at Union College, he was awarded the Urology Prize from Columbia University. During residency, he was awarded 1st Prize at the NY Academy of Medicine in the Resident's Essay Contest. He has won Prizes for clinical research from the AUA in 1987 and 1991. He conceived of PSA Density.
Dr. Benson's research has been supported by the T.J Martell Foundation since 1994. The Martell Foundation support led to numerous breakthroughs that advanced our treatment of prostate and bladder cancer. His research has been supported by the NCI and he has participated in numerous pharmaceutical industry projects. He has submitted or published 225 scientific articles since 1984. He has presented more than 200 papers at National Meetings.
