Dr. Raju Thomas is Professor and Residency Program Director in the Department of Urology at Tulane University School of Medicine. He served as Chair of the Department of Urology from 1994 to 2025. He earned his medical degree from Seth G.S. Medical College, University of Bombay, India (1975), completed his urology residency at Tulane University (1982), and completed a fellowship at the Tulane Primate Center co-sponsored by the American Urological Association and the National Kidney Foundation.
Dr. Thomas specializes in minimally invasive urologic surgery, including laparoscopy, robotic surgery, and endourologic procedures. He has pioneered innovative endoscopic and surgical techniques, including combining radical perineal prostatectomy with laparoscopy as a minimally morbid option for prostate cancer, and introduced urologic laparoscopy (1991) and robotic surgery to the Gulf South (2002). His expertise has made him a sought-after faculty member for advanced continuing medical education programs worldwide.
He has authored over 180 publications, serves as a peer reviewer for multiple urologic journals, and is active in numerous national and international scientific societies. His career highlights include Past President of the SES-AUA (2010), Past President of the World Congress of Endourology & SWL (2013), recipient of the AUA Distinguished Service Award (2016), and Past President of the AUA (2021–2022). Above all, his work rescuing and rebuilding Tulane’s Department of Urology after Hurricane Katrina (2005) is his greatest personal achievement. He is currently President-Elect of the Endourological Society.
