Jim Dupree, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Urology and the Ambulatory Care Clinical Chief for Urology at the University of Michigan. He completed his urology residency at Northwestern University and fellowship in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery (infertility) at Baylor College of Medicine. He also completed a Health Policy Fellowship with the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Dupree is a member of the Divisions of Andrology and Health Services Research at the University of Michigan. He is an expert in the advanced treatment of male infertility. He also teaches medical students and residents about male infertility and health care policy.
His research program focuses on reproductive health policy with a special emphasis on access to infertility care, including insurance coverage for infertility, and his long-term goal is to help people build their families. Dr. Dupree’s research is supported by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (R01-HD103603-01A1). His team is studying the impact of insurance coverage for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) on the health outcomes of women and infants, on health care costs, and on IVF use among less affluent and younger women. He also led a study, published in JAMA, about the impact of the University of Michigan’s decision to start covering infertility for its 35,000+ employees. His research has been used by employers and other policymakers in their deliberations about expanding insurance coverage for infertility.
In 2017, Dr. Dupree was awarded the American Urological Association (AUA) James Gallagher Health Policy Scholarship. He served as Chair of the Health Policy Council of the North Central Section of the AUA from 2017-2019. He served as a Member-at-Large on the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction’s (SSMR’s) Board of Directors from 2018-2020 and currently serves as SSMR’s Treasurer.
