Dr. Leonard Gomella is the Bernard W. Godwin, Jr. Professor of Prostate Cancer and Chairman of Urology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College. After medical school and urology training at the University of Kentucky, and a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the NCI in Bethesda he joined Jefferson in 1988 and was appointed Chair in 2002. He is Senior Director for Clinical Affairs for the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center and past Urology Chair for NRG (RTOG). Dr. Gomella is involved in prostate and bladder cancer translational research at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center and his team was first to use molecular techniques to detect prostate cancer circulating tumor cells in 1992.He authored “Recovering from Prostate Cancer” the first public book on prostate cancer in 1993. He has given over 600 presentations, written over 500 papers, chapters and monographs in Urology. Dr. Gomella has authored and edited 63 editions of 17 medical books and is Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Urology and three editions of the "5 Minute Urology Consult". He is best known for the medical student reference the “Scut Monkey Book”, known in the 12th edition as “Gomella and Haist’s Clinicians Pocket Reference”.
“Best Doctors in America”, “Top Doctors for Cancer”, Philadelphia Magazine’s “Top Doctors” have recognized him for urologic oncology including recognition in Newsweek. Men’s Health Magazine has listed Dr. Gomella as one of the 20 top urologists in the US. Awards include the American Cancer Society, the NCI, a “Distinguished Contribution Award” from the AUA and the “Jefferson Achievement Award in Medicine”. He has been president of the Mid Atlantic Section of the AUA and the Society of Urologic Oncology and elected to the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons. In 2019 Jefferson Health appointed him Vice President for Urology.
