Weill Cornell Medical College, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
I am a urological oncologic surgeon beginning my 34th year of service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I have a focused research and clinical interest in kidney cancer. My current surgical practice is focused on complex partial nephrectomy and resection of locally advanced renal cancers. In 1989 I began a prospective kidney surgical data base which, through the years, has grown now to over 7000 patients with over 350 fields of information for each patient and a median follow up of over 5 years. In 1999, I formally established a multi disciplinary kidney cancer working group (KCWG) consisting of oncologists, pathologists, epidemiologists, nephrologists, and radiologists. This group is a core resource for basic science and clinical research studies in kidney cancer at our center.
Significant contributions to the contemporary understanding and management of kidney cancer emanated from this research team including the development of prognostic nomograms incorporating modern kidney tumor histological sub-types, the determination of the oncological efficacy of partial nephrectomy, and the definition of the adverse impact of radical nephrectomy for such tumors on long term renal function. We also developed immuno PET scan (G250) which had the same diagnostic accuracy of a needle biopsy for diagnosing the malignant conventional clear cell RCC and, in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente of Northern California, we established a causal effect of chronic kidney disease in development of kidney cancer. In the 25 years of focused research work in kidney cancer, our research team has contributed over 300 peer reviewed clinical and scientific articles to the literature with presentations at major national and international meetings including AUA, SUO, GU ASCO, and SSO. In part because of this effort I was promoted to Tenure with Title, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Professor of Urology at Weill Cornell School of Medicine.
