Stephen J. Freedland, MD, is director of the Center for Integrated Research in Cancer and Lifestyle and Associate Director for Training and Education at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. He also is a professor in the Department of Urology at Cedars-Sinai. He has served on numerous American Urological Association guideline panels for prostate cancer and co-chaired a prostate cancer guideline panel for the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Freedland’s clinical area of expertise focuses on benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. His approach focuses on treating the whole patient, not just the disease, by combining traditional Western medicine with complementary holistic interventions. His research interests include investigations on the role of diet, lifestyle and obesity in prostate cancer development and progression, prostate cancer among racial groups, and prostate cancer risk stratification.
Dr. Freedland has published over 700 articles, and his research has appeared multiple times in JAMA, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Journal of Clinical Oncology, European Urology, and The Journal of Urology, among many others.
In addition to contributing original research, Dr. Freedland is an active reviewer for more than 50 peer-reviewed journals. He sits on the editorial board for Cancer Prevention Research, International Journal of Urology, and Nature Reviews Urology , and serves as editor-emeritus for Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Disease.
Dr. Freedland earned his medical degree from the University of California, Davis, and completed a residency in Urology at UCLA and a fellowship in urological oncology at Johns Hopkins. Before joining Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Freedland was on faculty at Duke University where he was an associate professor with tenure in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery and Department of Pathology.
