Dr. Helen L. Bernie is an Assistant Professor of Urology, and Director of the Male Sexual and Reproductive Medicine program at Indiana University. She is also the Andrology Fellowship program director. Her practice specializes in men's health, erectile dysfunction, peyronie's disease, prosthetic surgery, hypogonadism, male infertility, fertility preservation, & cancer survivorship. Dr. Bernie completed her six-year residency in Urology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester NY, and went on to complete a two-year fellowship in Male Sexual and Reproductive Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine and Microsurgery at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York, NY.
She is an active member of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) and the International Society of Sexual Medicine (ISSM) where she holds local and international roles, serving on the SMSNA Board of Directors, is the SMSNA Scientific Chair for the upcoming annual meeting in 2024 and serves on the young clinicians, social media, educational projects and men’s health committees. Dr. Bernie is also a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and served on the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology’s social media committee.
She is Co-PI on an NIH funded grant: NIH-NCI-R01 (CA258994-01A1) which is a randomized trial of PSMA-PET imaging prior to prostate cancer surgery to guide nerve sparing status and evaluate quality of life outcomes including sexual health. She has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications and is an invited speaker nationally and internationally. Dr Bernie was the 1st female in the US to start an Andrology fellowship. She also founded the Fertility Preservation program for AYA and prepubertal patients at Indiana University. She regularly teaches the residents and medical students. When she’s not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three boys.
