Dr. Obi Ekwenna is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology and Renal Transplantation at the University of Toledo, College of Medicine and Life Sciences here in Toledo. He is the Assistant Dean of Students Affairs at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Letters & Science.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California Berkeley and his medical degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He completed his urology residency program at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine in Miami Fla. Dr. Ekwenna also completed a two-year abdominal transplant fellowship at the University of Miami – Miami Transplant Institute. He is certified as an abdominal transplant surgeon by the American Society of Transplantation, and board certified by the American Board of Urology.
Dr. Ekwenna’s special interests include renal transplantation and pancreas transplantation, robotic donor nephrectomy and renal transplantation; general urology; minimally-invasive surgery; robotics, and genitourinary oncology.
His research interests include clinical outcomes in renal transplantation; paired donation and kidney exchange; global kidney exchange; overcoming barriers to transplantation; access and outcomes to renal transplantation in resource-poor environments; biomarkers in acute and chronic rejection, and surgical education and capacity building.
