Dr Welk obtained his Bachelor of Science degree and Medical degree at the University of Western Ontario. He then went on to complete his urology residency at the University of British Columbia and obtained his Royal College certification in Urology. He completed additional clinical training at the University of Toronto, where he specialized in the evaluation and treatment of male and female incontinence, neurogenic bladder dysfunction, and male urethral stricture disease. During his 2-year fellowship he also completed a Masters degree in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Welk is an Associate Professor of Surgery (Urology) and Epidemiology & Biostatics at Western University. His research has been funded by numerous national and international granting agencies; he has been the principle investigator on over $1 million in peer-reviewed funded from organizations such as the: Canadian Urology Association, American Urological Association, Academic Medical Organization of Southwestern Ontario, Lawson Research Institute, PSI Foundation, Rick Hansen Foundation, Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction, Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation, and Craig Neilsen Foundation. He has published over 180 peer reviewed manuscripts, including original research in several JAMA network journals, the British Medical Journal, the Journal of Urology and European Urology; he has presented his research at numerous national and international meetings. He has served as a frequent reviewer for several journals and is an Associate editor of Neurourology and Urodynamics. He is the current vice president of the International Neurourology Society and is an original member of Neurogenic Bladder Research Group.
