Dr. Marcio A. Averbeck received his medical degree from the Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil (2003). His specialization in Urology (Medical Residency Program) was obtained in 2008 from the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre, Brazil. He was appointed a Clinical Fellow at the Neuro-Urology Unit in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2009 after receiving a scholarship from the European Association of Urology (EAU).
He has devoted his time to residents training at Presidente Vargas Women's and Children's Hospital in Porto Alegre since returning to Brazil. Dr. Averbeck has also an appointment as invited Professor at Unisinos University Postgraduation Program. He has obtained his Master’s Degree and his PhD in Health Sciences from the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (2011/2017). In 2014, he was invited to take over as Neuro-Urology Coordinator at Moinhos de Vento Hospital (affiliated to Johns Hopkins Medicine International). Nowadays, he is also a member of the Urology Department at HSL/Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) in Porto Alegre.
Dr. Averbeck is an active member of several medical associations, including the American Urological Association (AUA), European Association of Urology (EAU), American Confederation of Urology (CAU), International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS), International Continence Society (Deputy-Chair of the ICS Standardization Steering Committee), International Neuro-Urology Society, and the Brazilian Urological Society (Director of SBU International Affairs Committee). He currently serves as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Urology.
Dr. Averbeck is the author of more than 80 pubmed-indexed scientific paper and dozens of book chapters in the field of functional urology, with a Scopus H-index of 42 and more than 1,800 citations. His main areas of interest are neuro-urology/neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, non-neurogenic male LUTS, BPH-related bladder dysfunction, neuromodulation techniques, and post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence.
