Prof. Marcio Averbeck is a Brazilian urologist with specialized expertise in Functional Urology. He completed his residency in Urology at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre in 2008, gaining extensive clinical experience across various domains within the field. In 2009, he was awarded a prestigious scholarship from the European Urological Scholarship Programme (EUSP) and undertook a clinical fellowship in the Neuro-Urology Unit in Innsbruck, Austria, under the mentorship of Professor Helmut Madersbacher. During this period, he was actively involved in surgical management of patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction as well as female pelvic floor disorders, under the direct supervision of Dr. Peter Rehder. This fellowship, endorsed by the European Association of Urology (EAU), had a significant impact on his clinical approach upon returning to Brazil.
Upon his return to Porto Alegre, Dr. Averbeck pursued further academic training, earning both his Master’s degree (2011) and Doctorate (PhD, 2017) in Health Sciences. His doctoral thesis, which focused on bladder dysfunction and collagen deposition in patients with chronic bladder outlet obstruction, received recognition as the best thesis of the year at his university. In 2014, he was appointed Neuro-Urology Coordinator at Hospital Moinhos de Vento, affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine International. In this role, he contributed significantly to clinical research, institutional collaborations, and the development of multicenter trials.
With more than a decade dedicated to medical education, Dr. Averbeck has mentored over 70 medical residents at President Vargas Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where he focused on urodynamics and urogynecological surgeries.
Dr. Averbeck currently serves as member of the Education Committee of the International Continence Society (ICS) and as Director of International Affairs of the Brazilian Urological Society (SBU). He has authored more than 100 PubMed-indexed scientific publications and numerous book chapters in functional urology.
