My fellowship training in neurourology and female urology was at Brown University in Rhode Island. In 1998, I was promoted to a full-tenure professor of urology & gynecology at Tulane University. I joined the Cleveland Clinic in 2000 and UC Irvine in 2011. Dr. Ghoniem is a national and international pioneer and expert in female urology, Pelvic Reconstructive surgery, and Voiding dysfunction. He is an American Board certified in FPMRS with the first-ever class of 2013 and recertified recently to 2033. He trained over 41 fellows (international & American), three of them chairs of urology. Dr. Ghoniem has improved and introduced many diagnostic and surgical techniques in urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse. He has served as an elected member at many urogynecology society meetings and presented frequently. In addition, he has published extensively in the field of Female Urology and Voiding Dysfunction. He has 298 publications (196 peer-reviewed papers, 35 chapters, two books, five special journal issues as editor, eight editorials,15 reviews, and 37 surgical videos). Ghoniem has improved and introduced many diagnostic and surgical techniques in urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse such as OAB, ISD classification, vaginal pack test, suburethral sling, Genisphere injection, bladder neck wrap, male sling, and trans obturator technique. In 2017, he was honored with the SUFU life achievement award, and in 2011, the Rodney Appell Incontinence Champion. He was the Local Chair of ICS 2020 meeting.
He is an inventor with a patent for a device to treat the overactive bladder (US9339329 B2).
