Matthias Hofer is a urologist at Urology San Antonio in San Antonio, TX. He graduated from the University of Ulm Medical School in Ulm, Germany, in 2002. Dr. Hofer began his Urology training at the University Hospital of Ulm in Germany and interrupted his training for a research fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston focusing on biomarkers of prostate cancer progression. After three years and wanting to pursue a career as physician-scientist he completed a residency in anatomic pathology also at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. After graduating in 2009 and driven by the desire to return to his original passion of urology, he became a urology resident at Northwestern University in Chicago graduating in 2016. He subsequently completed a fellowship specializing in urologic reconstruction, trauma and prosthetics at UT Southwestern in Dallas after which he returned to Northwestern University in 2016 as attending urologist. In 2020 he relocated to San Antonio where he continues to specialize in urologic reconstruction and prosthetic urology. Dr. Hofer has authored over 95 peer-reviewed publications with a focus on wound healing and factors modulating scar formation, specifically of the urethra, as well as the hormonal regulation of urethral healing and homeostasis.
