Dr. Elias Hyams, Associate Professor of Urology at Columbia University-Irving Medical Center, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of various urological cancers, male voiding dysfunction, and urinary tract obstruction. His clinical focus is in “risk-based” screening for prostate cancer, state-of-the-art diagnosis techniques such as image-guided biopsy, and minimally invasive surgery for prostate cancer. Dr. Hyams received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, then completed a urology residency at New York University-Langone Medical Center in New York, NY. He pursued a fellowship in minimally invasive urological surgery at the Brady Institute of Urology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, then worked at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH for five years prior to joining the faculty at Columbia. Dr. Hyams is co-director of the Genito-urinary Disease Management Team (DMT) at New York Presbyterian-Lawrence Hospital, working to develop clinical and educational programs to prevent and more effectively treat urological cancers. He was named a Westchester County Doctor of Distinction by Westfair Communications in 2018. Dr. Hyams is an active researcher in prostate cancer epidemiology, shared decision-making, and quality improvement in urology. He has an extensive record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, has written numerous scientific reviews and book chapters, and has lectured and presented his research both nationally and internationally.
