Course Description: Active surveillance is a guideline-supported management strategy for many patients with small solid and cystic renal masses; however, population-based data indicate less than 10% of eligible patients undergo active surveillance in the United States. The goal of this course is to increase the familiarity and comfort with active surveillance for patients with small solid and cystic renal masses. Through a case-based approach and active discussion, participants will become familiar with the latest data supporting active surveillance, understand how to safely watch a patient and tumor, decide when to intervene and make active surveillance a cost-effective strategy for their practice.

Learning Objectives:

Identify the efficacy, safety and risks associated with active surveillance for small solid renal masses suspicious for a renal cell carcinoma.
Describe the biology, natural history and management of cystic renal masses including aggressive cancers that can mimic cystic renal masses.
Select appropriate patients for active surveillance with either a cystic renal mass or a small, solid renal mass suspicious for a renal cell carcinoma.
Employ or design a surveillance strategy for an individual patient with a cystic renal mass or small, solid renal mass suspicious for a renal cell carcinoma suitable for active surveillance.
Identify the triggers for intervention for a patient undergoing active surveillance for a cystic renal mass or small, solid renal mass suspicious for a renal cell carcinoma.
