034IC - AUA Surgical and Medical Management of Stone Disease: Updates and Complex Case Scenarios

Learning Objectives:

• Attendees will refresh their knowledge of the AUA Surgical and Medical Stone Management Guidelines and also adapt these guidelines to complex case scenarios (e.g., pregnancy, urinary diversion, transplant kidneys, advanced chronic kidney disease, morbid obesity, calyceal diverticulum stones). They will also be provided an update to the guidelines including newer technologies (e.g., holmium versus thulium laser, mini versus standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy versus ureteroscopy versus shock wave lithotripsy, dusting versus extraction) and medications to incorporate into their practice of stone prevention. The course will incorporate the management of complications of surgical stone management. The course will be interactive with audience participation and time for Q and A interspersed throughout the format.
• Utilize holmium and thulium laser technologies in the management of stones and utilize laser settings to optimize dusting versus fragmentation techniques, as well as laser pulse modulation to help in their treatment of stones.
• Identify complications that can occur during stone management and apply techniques to mitigate the complication risks.
• Manage complex medical scenarios with kidney stones including uric acid stones, infection stones and calcium phosphate stones.
• Manage stones in more complex clinical scenarios that are not specifically addressed in the current AUA Guidelines, such as urinary diversion, kidney transplants, morbid obesity, chronic kidney disease.
• Describe and apply percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) techniques including standard PCNL versus mini PCNL.
• Describe the current indications for medical expulsion therapy.
• Interpret metabolic evaluation for stone prevention and apply medical therapy to different clinical scenarios.
